Ciena Healthcare | Laurels of Gahanna

OVERVIEW

The Laurels of Gahanna (owned and operated by Ciena Healthcare, formerly Laurel Healthcare) offers a full spectrum of post-hospital services, from short-term rehabilitation to long-term nursing care. Serving the Gahanna, New Albany, Westerville, and Northeast Columbus communities, Laurels of Gahanna faced a significant challenge. Their residents were being transported to and from dialysis clinics using a third-party transportation service that was not only unreliable, but costly.

Seeking to bring dialysis services in-house, Ciena Healthcare hired Lehman Daman to transform an existing break area into a six (6) station dialysis suite, complete with a biomed office and an occupational therapy training room.

CHALLENGES

Ensuring the quality of dialysis water is of the utmost importance as even minor impurities can be harmful to patients with compromised kidney functions. Furthermore, dialysis machines require precise water pressure and flow rates to function effectively.

With these critical aspects in mind, L/D assisted by making suggestions for the plumbing design throughout the project. L/D also conducted a thorough water flow analysis to ensure that the systems installed would function seamlessly. To enhance the water supply, a booster pump was required, and L/D also implemented a cold-water bypass which provided the necessary extra pressure.

Additionally, with working in an active nursing facility, L/D needed to carefully coordinate and plan construction activities around residents. Temporary barriers were set up around the jobsite to keep the construction area separate from resident areas, preventing any wandering incidents. L/D also utilized HEPA air filters to maintain air quality throughout the project.
